An egret is essentially a type of heron, with long, delicate, hair-like plumes that grow from their backs and shoulders during the breeding season, looking like graceful, wispy fans or trails of lace.

According to mythology, Caladrius is a Roman mythical snow-white bird who lived in the kings house and was able to absorb the sickness of others, flying away and healing both itself and the sick person. This legend is based on a real bird, which could have been a dove or a water bird like the heron which inspired this painting
